Good Work Goals

How healthy is your company? Adopt a sustainable wellbeing policy.

With the 10 Good Work Goals, we advise companies on how to create work environments that value good employees and support good societies. We convey the message that putting people first is essential to the health of the economy, society and the environment. The goals stress that ensuring a good work environment is a demonstrable responsibility, not just in times of stability and prosperity, but also in times of crisis and recovery such as the world is currently going through as a result of the COVID pandemic.

The 10 Good Work Goals:

Motto: We don’t learn safety without reason

We encourage a work environment that strives to prevent incidents, accidents or conditions that threaten or harm employees’ physical health.

This can be done, for example, by providing the necessary workplace procedures, safety equipment and training to minimise the risk of accidents, injuries and fatalities.

During COVID outbreaks, we must ensure that new types of work environments, work procedures and working from home do not increase the safety risks for employees.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: we take care of the body, heart and mind

We promote a work environment that encourages and enables physical health and activity, ergonomic design, healthy nutrition and positive mental wellbeing among employees.

This can be done, for example, by encouraging the use of exercise and mindfulness facilities or training, by ensuring that workplaces and jobs do not cause or exacerbate diseases or conditions, and by expanding the range of plant-based foods in our company restaurants.

During COVID outbreaks, all employees must have adequate PPE (personal protective equipment) and hand gel, social distance rules in the workplace must be respected and home workers must be supported in creating a healthy workplace.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: We may fall, but we get up again

We encourage a work environment that supports employees in their ability to deal positively with stress and adapt to unexpected or major changes.

This can be done, for example, by offering stress management courses or coaches and ensuring that employees can acquire multiple or different skills with a view to flexible jobs and careers.

During COVID outbreaks, levels of stress, anxiety and burnout among employees must be regularly monitored and mitigated.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: We recognise our diversity as our strength

We encourage a work environment that supports employee diversity and does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion or other relevant characteristics.

This can be done, for example, by using inclusive recruitment targets, implementing an anti-discrimination policy, and establishing partnerships to increase the intake of under-represented groups as potential employees.

During COVID outbreaks, we must be alert to how the crisis affects different employee groups differently and sometimes more.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: We do what we love and we love what we do

We encourage a work environment that prioritises job satisfaction, employee satisfaction and team culture.

This can be done, for example, by asking employees to determine their level of job satisfaction, by talent recognition, training employees in team skills and by regularly organising team-building activities.

During COVID outbreaks, priority must be given to connecting (virtually or in person), stimulating motivation, and showing empathy for employees’ personal circumstances.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: We work to live; we don’t live to work

We encourage a work environment that supports a healthy balance between the time spent working and not working and relationships inside and outside the workplace.

This can be done, for example, by offering flexible work, discouraging excessive working hours or digital availability, providing adequate maternity/paternity leave and by providing childcare in the workplace.

During COVID outbreaks, we must ensure flexibility, understanding and support to support working from home where needed, while respecting employees’ free time or family time.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: We take care of our planet so it can take care of us

We encourage a work environment that promotes environmental awareness and measures for the efficient use of resources and safeguards ecosystem services.

This can be done, for example, by committing to science-based climate and biodiversity goals, evolving from a linear to a circular (zero waste) economy, and taking action to regenerate nature.

During COVID outbreaks, we must make the extra effort to do away with disposable plastic, such as face masks and packaging, especially now that we have rediscovered the psychological benefits of living in nature.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: We are the support you can count on

We promote a work environment that supports personal and professional development and rewards employees fairly.

This can be done, for example, by offering continuous learning opportunities, through transparent performance assessment, supporting living wages in our supply chain and by tackling the gender pay gap.

During COVID outbreaks, we must make every effort to ensure that employees remain employed and remunerated, and to have them take further training and retraining where necessary.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: We work together towards a higher goal

We encourage a work environment that gives employees the feeling that they are making a positive contribution to a greater social, stakeholder-oriented goal.

This can be done, for example, by regularly involving stakeholders and by setting ambitious strategic goals to address global social and environmental challenges.

During COVID outbreaks, caring for the health and wellbeing of employees, customers and other stakeholders can give extra meaning to work.

Related SDG’s:

Motto: We leave the world in a better state than the one in which we found it

We promote a work environment that gives employees the opportunity to take action to improve the environment and society.

This can be done, for example, by giving back to society through charitable donations, through employee volunteering programmes and cross-sector partnerships.

During COVID outbreaks, we take action to help those most affected by the crisis. These are often the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and excluded people in our society.
